Lifeline out of poverty for Children in Zambia

by Peer Education Programme Against AIDS (PEPAIDS)
Vetted

Summary

Over half a million Zambian children are unable to access conventional education. Schools of Good Hope project works with Zambia's poorest communities, who have set up their own makeshift schools and enables them to provide the good standard of education they desire for their children. By training the untrained volunteer teachers and providing essential resources we can help give Zambia's poorest children a lifeline out of poverty.

Challenge

In Zambia over half a million children don't have places in government schools, either because there are no spaces, they live too far away, or because they can't afford the fees. Communities respond by setting up their own makeshift community schools, but these lack the most basic resources and the teachers often have no training. Consequently the poorest children end up getting the poorest education.

Solution

In 2013 we want to reach an additional 7 schools, building on the success from 2012 when our project improved the quality of education in 7 community schools in Zambia's poorest regions. We provide basic teacher training to the untrained volunteer teachers and vital educational resources, through an innovative UK-Zambian schools linking programme. Together we give the poorest and most disadvantaged children an education that is comparable to that received by their government-educated peers.

Long-Term Impact

We've already seen tangible results in 2012; more than 1,000 children were impacted. All of the teachers trained to date are, for the first time, following the Zambian Basic Education syllabus and delivering structured, planned lessons. Enrolment, attendance, classroom participation and behavioural management have improved across all 7 schools. Our aim is to continue the project in existing schools and extend our reach to an additional 7 schools so that at least 2,500 children benefit in 2013.
