What's Happening and How to Help

We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like these. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges.

The projects listed below are led by vetted GlobalGiving partners responding to this disaster. You can donate directly to a specific project or to GlobalGiving’s Libya Flood Relief Fund and we'll allocate it to where it's needed most. GlobalGiving will post reports about how your donation has been put to use.

Responding to the Flooding in Libya
On September 10, a powerful "medicane" dubbed Storm Daniel made landfall in Libya, bringing strong winds and such heavy rainfall to northeastern areas of the country that two dams upstream of the coastal city of Derna collapsed the next day. The breach and resulting floodwaters had catastrophic consequences for the city's people and infrastructure. International Medical Corps is responding by deploying a medical team and using other lifesaving health interventions.
Libya Floods : help the survivors!
The Mediterranean storm 'Daniel' has caused heavy rain that poured into coastal towns of Libya. The heavy rain caused two dams to break, causing an enormous flash flood that swept into residential areas, including those in Derna. The Mayor of Derna reported that 2,000 people have been killed and as many as 5-6,000 people are still missing. Many buildings have also collapsed. It is a major catastrophe. The government of Libya and the Libyan Red Cross is on the field tending to the survivors.

About GlobalGiving’s Disaster Response

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.

We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.

They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
