Middle school-aged youth who are struggling with their sexual orientation and/or gender identity currently have no place to find support, education, and acceptance to alleviate the isolation and depression they feel. This leads not only to self-harm, low esteem, and potential suicide, but also fosters a lack of confidence, hinders their maturation, and disrupts personal social skills.
Having a support group dedicated to this age group with give the youth a sense of belonging; will fight the feelings of loneliness; and foster confidence, self-worth, and maturation. The ability to develop friendships, find mentors, and learn healthy behaviors is critical to youth at this age.
First, many youth will discover their full selves, and will approach young adulthood with a sense of purpose and the healthy habits and outlook to become productive adults. Depression, emotional, and psychological problems will diminish. From a community standpoint, these youth will then take their skills and confidence make a difference in the greater world. Finding their dreams are within reach - just as they are - is an amazing transformation to behold!
