Defense for Children International - Palestine is expanding the direct legal services and support we offer to Palestinian children and their families across the West Bank each year. Our attorneys defend children in an Israeli military court system known for widespread and systematic ill-treatment and torture. As the situation on the ground deteriorates, ill-treatment grows more severe. Our work is critical to the protection and safety of each child we represent.
Israel is the only country that automatically prosecutes around 700 children in military courts each year. From the moment of arrest, Palestinian children in the West Bank encounter ill-treatment and torture at the hands of Israeli forces. Three out of four children suffer physical violence during arrest or interrogation. DCIP offers free legal aid for Palestinian children targeted for arrest, helping children and families navigate a military court system that denies them basic rights.
For over 25 years, DCIP has offered child-friendly legal services for Palestinian children in the Israeli military court system. Our attorneys provide expert legal advice and support for each child and their family, monitor ill-treatment and fair trial violations, work to ensure their protection while in prison and mitigate trauma by securing their release as soon as possible.
The same attorneys working each day to protect children in Israeli military courts also collect extensive and detailed documentation of the ill-treatment children experience. This evidence fuels DCIP's innovative advocacy strategies and campaigns to build a grassroots movement of support and target decision makers to effect policy change. Ours is a comprehensive approach with the combined impact of exposing Israel's mistreatment of Palestinian children and ultimately securing them a safe future.
