The COVID-19 pandemic continues to cause a significant impact on the Los Angeles (LA), California County area. Our work with two local partner organizations will help address pressing community needs. Together, our efforts will help to slow the spread of the pandemic and provide food security to hungry families across LA County.
At this time (mid-November), there are more than 327,000 confirmed cases with over 7,000 deaths in LA County. The threat level remains high, signifying that COVID-19 could overwhelm the community and health care system if not controlled. COVID testing facilities whose work aims to slow the spread are facing severe volunteer shortages. Additionally, the economic crisis triggered by the pandemic has skyrocketed the number of families in LA County now also experiencing food insecurity.
By providing critically needed volunteer labor, we are building local capacity to deliver services for which community need is at an all-time high. Working in partnership with LA Regional Food Bank and CORE, we are assembling emergency meal kits, distributing meals to families in need, and orchestrating free COVID-19 tests. On a weekly basis, our combined volunteers aim to assemble 50,000 emergency meal kits, distribute 55,000 meals to families in need, and orchestrate 20,000 COVID-19 tests.
It is not yet clear when these conditions will improve, making it imperative that our team stays in LA as long as possible. Support for this project will help our experienced staff and motivated volunteers continue delivering these critically needed services into the new year.
