Story Gathering Events Provide Inspiration

LA Commons' Community Arts Program is in high gear as we are now into our third neighborhood for this season. We completed the first phase of our Highland Park Mural which will resume in early September to complete the second phase. While these students wait for the next phase to begin, they have continued as a group and have volunteered to create a banner for the Highland Park Community Garden.

In April we joined a team of community partners to bring our program to MacArthur Park where we will be creating large individual banners based on the daily lives of the Central American community. These banners will be hung from trees in the local community park for three months. And our third project is part of the opening of a new Metro Line in the Leimert Park/Crenshaw Corridor area. These youth artists will be designing light pole banners for the opening of the new line in 2011.
