Meet Jin Dong

Jin Dong, Christmas 2010
Jin Dong, Christmas 2010

JIN DONG, a high school senior, has lived at an orphanage in Korea since he was seven. He is extremely focused on his studies, achieving one of the top grades in his English class. On weekends, if he isn’t teaching himself college prep material, he is helping his house mother with laundry or playing soccer with the other kids at the orphanage. Jin Dong typically studies on his own until 2:00am at the orphanage, while his younger brothers sleep around him in the room they share.

Because he has spent most of his life in an orphanage, Jin Dong does not have the opportunity to attend an after-school college preparatory academy, like most Korean students do from an early age. Instead, Jin Dong attends a vocational high school where he and his classmates are being trained for hourly jobs in an electronics field.

Jin Dong plans to surpass society’s expectations and is preparing to attend one of Korea’s top universities. He has the opportunity to gain admission to an elite university through an interview process open to special applicants, like orphans. Jin Dong will study business administration and hopes to become a management expert. “Then, I will help children in poverty regularly,” says Jin Dong. Through the Post-High School Support Initiative, KKOOM will help Jin Dong with his college expenses and help him achieve his goal of helping others.

“My house mother always inspires me. She didn’t bear me, but she has always supported and loved me, and my siblings at the orphanage.” ~ Jin Dong

This month, Jin Dong will travel around Korea for his college admissions interviews. Your contributions to the Post-High School Support Initiative will help help cover Jin Dong's travel and other college prep expenses.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19th is BONUS DAY on GlobalGiving.org, and KKOOM will receive a 30% match from GlobalGiving for all gifts made on that day. Please consider a timely gift on Wednesday, October 19th.

We sincerely thank you for your generosity and interest in affecting the lives of orphans in South Korea.
