The project is aimed at economic empowerment through employment and income generating opportunities creation for 250 women in Kitui County. This will be through support in production, value addition and marketing of sugar cane, fruits and vegetable juices which have nutritional and health benefits. Its purpose is to increased income and create employment opportunities for women headed households and those caring for disabled children. It will enhance their knowledge and skills in the enterprise.
The project area has many women headed households & women caring for disabled children, who are unemployed and lack resources and capacity to take care of their children. Value addition and marketing of sugarcane, fruits and vegetables, plenty in the area is a great opportunity for their economic empowerment. Sugarcane marketing involve carrying of heavy loads to the market which has negative impact on their health, and low returns. The business will guarantee their income, employment & health.
Value addition and marketing of sugarcane, fruits and vegetables through juice production, packaging and marketing at the source or in the nearby Kitui town can create employment and income generating opportunities for women and youth. It will also lead to improvement of the health of women for they will no longer need to carry heavy loads of the produce to the market.
The project will reduce poverty and increase food security in through household economic empowerment of women. The following are the anticipated results: 1. Elimination of hunger and poverty 2. Improved health for women 3. Economic empowerment of poor women 4. Improved food security and nutrition 5. Improved environmental conservation and climate change mitigation through increased production of sugarcane and fruits 6. Improved education and health for children
