Kimi Island, Uganda Boat Ambulance/Maternal Health

by Maternal Earth Inc

Summary

Women living on Kimi Island, Uganda lack access to maternal health care. Only one midwife tends to the population, with any complicated cases being referred to the main land. Since only one boat leaves the island a day care is often delayed even in emergency situations. Providing a boat ambulance dedicated to maternal health will increase access to care not just for Kimi island but for the surrounding islands as well who don't have any medical staff. Day clinics will be run as well with the boat

Challenge

Lack of access to health care leads to a very high maternal and infant mortality rate. Women who have an abnormal labor are sent to Entebbe. Because women have to wait for the one boat a day, multiple babies are born on the small boat a year. This is unsafe for both mother and child. Women in the surrounding islands lack access to even a midwife. If these women are granted permission from their partners to see the midwife on Kimi they have to wait for a boat and pay, which is prohibitive.

Solution

Providing a boat ambulance will make for a safer delivery and a decrease in infant deaths. Women will not have to wait up to 24 hours while in labor to begin their journey to a bigger clinic in Entebbe. A boat ambulance and funding will make day visits to the surrounding islands possible. The women and infants in the surrounding islands will be able receive much needed prenatal and post natal care. HIV counseling and testing can also be provided to this area which is greatly underserved.

Long-Term Impact

Long term impacts include a lowered infant mortality rate, a lowered maternal mortality rate, better birth out comes for both mother and child, and a lowered HIV rate. Healthier women will equate to healthier communities. This is a wonderful opportunity to have a lasting, measurable impact on a community.
