The project is to save 500 Samburu girls from FGM by mobilizing and building the capacities and competencies of 2000 Samburu men and boys towards the eradication of the vice. The FGM ritual has devastating consequences to the girl's health and well-being to an extent that it destroys their quality of live and subjects them to live long human rights violations. Project activities are: 5 community forums 7 focus group discussions 3 sporting day events, 1000 posters 3 banners 3 radio show

FGM is often performed by women on other women and young girls, yet the driving force and the proponents of the vice, men, are far removed from the act itself. For us at the Coexist Initiative, FGM is part of a continuum of control wielded over the bodies and sexualities of women. It is a practice carried out by women for the benefit of men and for the validation of the invisible hand of patriarchy. The project is a grassroots initiative targeting male dominance.

The project hacks at the root drivers of FGM which are traditionally held justifications. The project opens FGM to open and objective dialogue, which remains a key gap in FGM programming. It endeavors to spur change through culturally sensitive, human rights-based approaches that continue to yield results

Long-Term Impact

Make safe at least 500 girls from FGM in 2014-2015 Reduction in child marriage by 10% Improve school retention for girls by 2% 15% increase in security for girls at both the community and family levels Awareness of the negative social and health consequences of FGM will rise by 15%
