What your organization was trying to achieve and why;
We were aiming at reducing deforestation, and increasing the community reserves of renewable wood fuel for domestic and commercial purposes. The reason why we embarked on this idea is because the school’s hilly neighborhoods had become prone to devastating floods during the rainy seasons, and wood fuel had become expensive for the school to afford. Board members thought that if the community is mobilized and supported to do tree planting on the surrounding hills, the school will be getting renewable sources of wood fuel.
The idea or method was that you tried;
The school gave out free seedlings of fast growing tree varieties to parents for planting on the bare hills surrounding the school – providing a good forest cover on the hills, preventing landslides, and becoming sources of wood fuel within four years. The school liaised with the government agriculture officer to provide support supervision to the agro-forestry gardens in the community, distribute fertilizers and provide farmer education.
Why the idea or method failed – admit responsibility;
The idea failed because parents sold off the firewood to without the school’s consent, and after six years, very few trees remained standing, and the school was back to the past – experiencing shortages of wood fuel. We could not sue any parent because at that time we were not a corporate entity which can sue or be sued.
What your organization learned from the experiment; and how your organization is using that experience to improve its work.
We realized the usefulness of becoming a legal entity with powers of managing projects, and signing legally binding agreements. We used that experience to complete our legalization with he government of Uganda, and institute a projects management desk.
