Summary

Hurricane Sandy has left behind a trail of destruction along the East Coast, displacing thousands, and changing the lives of many more. Since 1985, Kids in Distressed Situations has responded to natural disasters quickly and effectively. Our response to Hurricane Sandy is well underway, and we need your help to ensure that families living in NY, NJ and West Virginia, receive warm winter clothing, coats, shoes, undergarments, blankets, and baby products to endure the harsh winter weather.

Challenge

K.I.D.S. needs your help now to provide disaster relief to U.S. communities as a result of Hurricane Sandy. After slamming into NY and NJ, Sandy spawned floods, fires, storm surges, power outages and blizzards as far away as West Virginia. Throughout this region, it is estimated that Hurricane Sandy has caused nearly $20 billion in damage. Children and families in shelters and those returning to their homes are in dire need of new apparel, coats, blankets, shoes, and baby products.

Solution

Families impacted by Hurricane Sandy lost everything: their homes, their possessions and even their sense of safety. By providing families with critical essentials, K.I.D.S. can ensure an easier road to recovery. In NYC, K.I.D.S. continues to work with local partners to gut, rebuild and refurnish the homes of those most severely impacted by Sandy. In NJ, we are continuing to work with local partners to provide Sandy victims with basic essentials, such as warm shoes, clothing, and home goods.

Long-Term Impact

For the remainder of 2013, K.I.D.S. will work closely with all of our local partners to ensure that these families' basic needs are covered. Although it has been 4 months since the disaster, families continue to struggle to rebuild their lives. In the midst of their despair, K.I.D.S. is committed to bringing hope and joy to victims of Hurricane Sandy. By providing them with essential materials, families can focus their time and energy on rebuilding their lives and beginning anew.
