Iron Street Urban Farm is a 7 acre site on Chicago's south side that will produce local, healthy, and sustainable food year-round with a focus on serving, training, and engaging vulnerable populations
Great disparity exists between the fresh food available to the various communities in Chicago, especially the city's south and west sides. While some communities enjoy a great variety of fruits and vegetables year round from all over the world, others lack access to the most basic produce necessary for a balanced and nutritious diet. This is especially detrimental to youth for they are being ingrained with poor eating habits from an early age that will lead to inevitable health problems.
Iron Street Urban Farm will not only provide healthy produce to 'food desert' communities year-round, but also train individuals from these areas on how to become leaders in local food systems development and the emerging green job industry.
This facility will have the capacity to feed thousands of individuals annually and teach even more on the inner-workings of an urban farm. Within the first year, the site has already trained over 150 at-risk youth!
