Ipogun Water and Sanitation Project

Summary

Ipogun-Ayo community in Ifedore LGA, Ondo state has a growing population of 421,100. The entire community does not have toilets, potable water (polluted stream) nor refuse disposal system. The elders, youths and the local health workers have reported that many diseases suffered by the people, such as chronic diarrhea, soil transmitted helminthes,Schistosomiasis, Elephantiasis and Hepatitis were directly related to the open defecation, lack of good water supply and poor hygienic practices.

Challenge

The community of over 400,000 people do not have toilets, waste disposal system nor access to potable water. Everyone, including children drink from the polluted stream where some defecate openly. Despite the intervention of government, Schistosomiasis has become endemic in the community and this is threatening the existence of the young ones. The long wait before getting where to defecate and act of open defecation has caused many women and girls to suffer urinary tract infections

Solution

We plan to construct 5 public toilets (one in the primary school), I incinerator and 2 bore holes in central locations in the community to solve the problems of open defecation, potable water and waste. We also realize that without mental awareness and proper public understanding of the essence of good sanitation, all effort will be fruitless; so we have started educating the community on the importance of good hygiene and sanitation to ensure behavior change and sustainability of the project

Long-Term Impact

Reduction in the health problems caused by open defecation, improper waste disposal and lack of clean water. The over 40,000 men, women and children in the community will have good health, clean water and sanitation. The children will be able to live long to fulfil their potentials as compared to the current rate of school absenteeism due to chronic diarrhea, typhoid, dysentery, urinary track infections and the likes
