Project #27175

Quality Education for 1500 Under-served Children

by Katha

Katha Lab School is a project for providing quality education in Delhi's largest slum. Delhi is a national capital of India where people migrate from poorer areas. Children's education, health and overall well being is at risk. Girls specifically are at highest risk with issues like trafficking and child labor. Katha identify such children and enroll in the school and provide high quality education. Till now 40,000 children have been benefited and emerged themselves out of cycle of poverty.
total goal

Urban India has a high incidence of urban poverty. With 27 million populations in 2016, Delhi ranks second among the most populous metropolitan Indian cities. The Delhi Economic Report says that over 50% of this population lives in "slum like conditions." With nearly two lakh out-of-school children between the ages of 0-14 years in Delhi, they are at high risk of being neglected, girls trafficked and early marriages etc which are some of the gruesome realities of life of the children in slums

We at Katha firmly believe that an inclusive approach to economic growth of India would require special attention to quality education, vocational/entrepreneurship skills development for children, youth and women from under-served sections of our society. Skills training, keeping the market in mind is an urgent need. Katha has delivered on this front consistently, since 2001. Relevant K-12 education equips our youth to face the future with confidence and with a better success rate.

Long-Term Impact

Katha apart from educating about 1500 children also intend to develop a sense of ownership of the community by providing quality integrated education. Realizing that the children are our key for a better future we wish to give the child from an early age the reign for dreaming for a better future and developing their own community. However, the result cannot be accepted by just giving the control but by making them realise that it is their responsibility to bring about progressive changes.
