Report on the current progress of the situation of refugee human rights defenders in Uganda
As we believe that in order to address the question of refugee rights in Uganda, we need to build up a strong team of refugees documenting human rights violations and conducting activities to create awareness about the challenges related to refugee rights violations in Uganda.
We seem to be confronted to so many challenges and sometimes we may find it difficult to get started on one thing. The current situation needs courageous people who tackle things one by one.
Here are the achievements for the last three months:
We managed to post a project on GlobalGiving which is still active and some people have managed to like and share this project,
We organized a four days training of 10 human rights defenders on International human rights Law facilitated by Dr. Volker Kitz from Germany with a support from Beacom of Peace.
We are currently offering accelerated English Lessons to six refugee human rights defenders so that they can get the language capacity to do their work here in Uganda,
We have been focusing on creating network with other human rights organizations both in Uganda and outside Uganda and per now we have managed to get in contact with the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative and the Front Line Human Rights Defenders.
Refugee Human rights defenders participated in the commemoration of the World Day Against Death Penalty on October 10th, 2013. We have also managed to participate in the ongoing online campaigns by ICC organization members to ask the African Union to cooperate with the Court which is opposed to the withdrawing of the African
We have managed to intervene on behalf of refugees who are arrested by both the Police and the Town Authority, a total number of 6 refugees were released on police bond and their cases dismissed alter.
We facilitated two information sessions bringing together refugees and students from the International Students based in the USA on the conflict in the Great Lakes Region and Gender issues among refugees in Uganda.
Most of challenges are related to the lack of equipment and facilitation to do our
We have not yet managed to follow up refugee cases which are located at long distance and this has exposed these refugees to series of rights violations,
The communication in terms of accessing the internet, transport for urgent cases and telephone have been the serious challenge in order to respond to the needs of many refugees,
Number of us cannot access the laptop, a photo camera and this has delayed the work of refugee human rights defenders in Uganda,
Our project link on GlobalGiving has not received any donations yet this is crucial for the work of many refugee human rights defenders in Uganda,
Refugees human rights defenders are confronted to their daily livelihood challenges as they always spend most of their time working on problems of refugees yet there is no one looking after them.
The best way to reach out refugees and participate in the protection and the welfare of refugees in Uganda is to strengthen the capacity of refugee human rights defenders so that they can be more effective on ground. We are happy that this is possible now through the collaboration of GlobalGiving.
As we all part of the Global Citizenship we do call upon the international solidarity with refugee human rights defenders in Uganda in what we can call responsibility sharing. There are things which you would like to do but you may not because you are not here, however through this project we can do it together. This is the best opportunities to support us financially.
