Canica de Oaxaca A.C. is a non profit organization established in 1992 in Oaxaca, Mexico. Our goal is to promote development of children who work on the streets through an integral program that provides, food, education, psychological care, recreational, cultural, artistic and sports activities for 75 families who live in poverty or extreme poverty.
Oaxaca is the second poorest state in Mexico, with poverty and extreme poverty rates of 62% and 31% many families can't satisfy basic needs such as food. 57% of people over 15 have incomplete elementary education, of which 16% are illiterate, 43% don't have social security or access to health care, 5.6% of children between 6 and 14 don't go to school. Numerous families to resort to street labor for survival, which poses diverse threats for children's life, security, integrity and opportunities.
Our goal is to strengthen families to overcome as many limitations as we can so that they can foster their own opportunities, especially by providing children nutritional follow-up and food; education, psychological care and diverse activities. By providing proper nutrition for our children, they can have a better educational achievement and prevent future health problems. We also teach families how to prepare healthy nutritious meals with local affordable produce, as well as hygiene habits.
Providing children a good nutrition and helping families improve their hygiene and health habits will allow them to increase their educational achievement as a means to break the circles of poverty, violence and exclusion and thus open up better opportunities for their integral development, including the posibility to complete their education up to university level, better job opportunities and healthier lives. We also provide educational accompainment to ensure a better academic trajectory.
