In response to the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, Internews is working with local Myanmar media and humanitarian aid agencies to get critical information directly to the people who need it most.
Before the earthquake, nearly 20 million people needed critical aid as a result of the ongoing civil war in Myanmar. Now, survivors are struggling to find shelter, medical care, and food--yet with international journalists banned and independent media under attack, there are few reliable sources of information on how to access lifesaving services. The military regime has censored internet and blocked media access in affected areas, making it even harder for communities to get the help they need.
Internews can move funds quickly to frontline local media, ensuring vital information reaches those who need it most. Our on-the-ground partners need essential supplies to maintain their safety, security, and ability to report---including flack jackets and protective gear, medical supplies to protect them from disease and infection which are proliferating, internet access and power banks, and transportation costs and per diems for food and shelter as costs are rising rapidly.
Internews has been working in Myanmar for over 20 years, equipping both exiled and local media to serve as key information providers in their communities and working with humanitarian responders to navigate Myanmar's complex information landscape. Equipment, infrastructure and support provided to Myanmar journalists and media will improve their ability to inform their communities, ultimately providing people with the information they need to participate in long-term relief and recovery.
