In 2013, The Teacher Foundation will extend its successful teacher and school leader training programme to another 250 teachers and 50 Heads in Yadgiri District, Karnataka, one of the educationally most backward districts in India where learning levels are extremely low. The benefit of the programme will reach 100,000 underprivileged school children.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Yadgiri district in Karnataka is one of the educationally most backward districts in India. Hardly 30% of children pass the Pre-degree exams and less than half pass the School Board exam (2011). TTF's programmes have been conducted amongst hundreds of teachers and Heads in primary schools in 13 clusters in this district for the last several years. While several of them have imbibed the training and have visibly begun teaching using better methods, in other cases the improvements could be better.

How will this project solve this problem?

TTF plans to run its 6 month Darpana programme with 5 days of workshops and 3 rounds of school based support for fresh teachers. For teachers who have undergone the programme in the past, 3 days of customized training and 2 rounds of support will be given. In addition, Heads of the primary schools will also be trained through our Samartha programme with 8 days of workshops over 6 months.

Potential Long Term Impact

Every teacher who becomes more confident and more effective through training impacts over 400 students over a minimum 10 year career. By training 250 teachers and 50 heads of schools, the impact will be on over 100,000 children. Hence, the long-term impact is huge! TTF will measure the short-term immediate improvement through workshop feedback, comprehensive classroom observation checklists and overall pre and post ratings of changes in the classroom.
