Girl children in the local Kom community of Muteff hardly have an opportunity to go to school, talk less of completing elementary education. Even when they have the opportunity to complete school they encounter lots of difficulty copping as they lack what people elsewhere take for granted-electricity. Productivity is low as they hardly concentrate on their studies.
The lack of clean and sure source of energy for children to read after school hampers the performance of girls in this poor African community. Kerosene lamps are a serious fire hazard here, killing and maiming tens of thousands. Kerosene and diesel fuel are also a safety threat, whereas solar electric light comes as the safest measure for all.
Solar light improves literacy of children, especially the girl child, because they can read after dark more easily than they can by candle or lamp light. Since girls in this community go to assist their mothers in farms after school while boys are allowed all the time to play and read, they can only read after dark. With solar lamps, school work improves and eye sight is safeguarded and climatic conditions improved as less smoke is emitted.
Use of solar electric systems decreases the amount of local air pollution. With a decrease in the amount of kerosene used for lighting, there is a corresponding reduction in the amount of local pollution produced. Solar rural electrification also decreases the amount of electricity needed from small diesel generators. It also reduces GHG and other negative effects of climate change and society's health..
