Improve SRHR for 1000 deaf girls in Zimbabwe

Deaf women will be offered an opportunity to participate in defining their sexual and reproductive health and will benefit from improved services. Accessibility and availability of compressive information is a powerful tool for decision making. The project will ensure that Deaf women make informed decisions regarding their reproductive health.

Many deaf women are stuck in abusive relationships and are victims of domestic violence and other forms of public violence directed at women. They however do not know what to do about it because they lack understanding of their rights. Information on GBV and personal rights has not reached them because the information is not packaged in an accessible manner i.e. Sign Language. Lives are being lost unnecessarily and the perpetrators of such violence are not prosecuted.

Deaf Women Included, an organisation formed by a group of deaf and hearing women to address issues affecting Deaf women in the country, is proposing to carry out a project aimed at teaching deaf women and children about Gender Based Violence and women's rights. The women will receive information on GBV in Sign Language through training by other Deaf women. The initiative will begin with 5 major urban centres before expanding to smaller urban centres and rural areas in subsequent years.

Long-Term Impact

The project is to improve the understanding of Gender Based Violence among young deaf women and children and to reduce deaths among the Deaf women due to domestic and public violence. This will be achieved through the training of deaf women through workshops conducted at various centres countrywide. In broad terms the project will lead to young deaf women and children are more informed of Gender Based Violence service providers and ready to report GBV cases and seek redress.
