Summary

86% of Dallas ISD students live at or below the poverty threshold. Which is a household income of 3 people making less than $22,000 a year. Only 16% of the students that graduate from a Dallas High School will go on to college, and 90% will drop out of college. Foundation For C.H.O.I.C.E. matches these at-risk high school students with a mentor for a one-on-one relationship. With the end goal being that these students complete a college degree. This project will support 100 students.

Challenge

86% of Dallas ISD students live at or below the poverty threshold. Which is a household income of 3 people making less than $22,000 a year. Only 16% of the students that graduate from a Dallas High School will go on to college, and 90% will drop out of college. These numbers are tragic and unacceptable. Dallas is one of the largest school districts in the country.

Solution

Foundation For C.H.O.I.C.E. matches these at-risk high school students with a mentor for a one-on-one relationship. With the end goal being that these students complete a college degree. This project will help match 100 students one-on-one with a mentor. C.H.O.I.C.E. curriculum is used to support the volunteer mentors as they help these students navigate their final two years in high school and 4 years in college. The organization has a 100% college acceptance rate.

Long-Term Impact

The US faces a shortfall of 5 million college educated workers by the year 2020. In 1970, the US ranked #1 in High School Graduations and #1 in College Graduations. Today, the US ranks #22 in High School Graduations and #15 in College Graduations. One college graduate earns 66% more annually than a high school graduate. Every year Foundation For C.H.O.I.C.E. will add at least 100 new students into the program to impact the college educated community.
