Ignite Moments of STEM Discovery for Youth

by US2020

US2020, a national initiative of Citizen Schools, transforms everyday science, technology, engineering, and math professionals into STEM Superheroes, capable of changing the trajectory of STEM education in America. With the power of the US2020 Platform, STEM professionals engage in high-quality STEM mentoring with underserved and underrepresented students. STEM Superheroes work with students in hands-on projects that create moments of discovery and inspire students to pursue a STEM career.

By 2022, the United States will need more than nine million STEM professionals. Currently, only 18% of college students are pursuing core STEM subjects. Despite strong STEM job growth in the past decade, U.S. STEM professionals remain 74% male and 85% White/Asian. Providing quality access to STEM education and careers to all children --especially girls, students from communities with a lower socioeconomic status, and students of color-- is an economic and social justice imperative for the U.S.

Quality mentorship is uniquely positioned to address the barriers to pursuing STEM careers -- the lack of exposure to STEM and the lack of connections to STEM professionals. Research shows that student interest in STEM has been found to be more strongly predictive of the pursuit of a STEM degree than academic achievement. STEM Superheroes help students develop improved attitudes and behaviors and have more confidence in their STEM capabilities and more knowledge of STEM careers.

Long-Term Impact

US2020's mission is to change the trajectory of STEM education in America by dramatically scaling the number of STEM professionals engaged in high-quality STEM mentoring with youth. If we can scale the number of STEM Superheroes who engage with underrepresented students in high-quality, experiential learning opportunities, we can significantly increase inspiration in STEM education and create more opportunities for girls, low-income students and students of color to pursue a STEM career.
