This project will provide at least 3-5 days of relief aid & supplies on Islands that could mean life or death to the people that reside there. Supplies will be placed in bunkers, thus providing time for 1st responder search and rescue teams to arrive. Tarps, chainsaws, industrial bladders filled with water and fuel, flashlights, satellite phones, first aid kits, shovels, all with the goal of keeping people safe during and after a hurricane.
We are a Bahamian NPO that sends relief aid and supplies either by mailboat or plane from the mainland Nassau. After a major hurricane, it can take days to get water, food, and basic necessities to the islands. The logistics are a catastrophe when a hurricane hits one or more of these. The Islands cover 5,358 square miles, with 700 islands and 2400 cays that make up The Bahama Islands, and 30 of those inhabited. This project will help save lives by having these much needed supplies on hand.
Advance purchases alleviate the reactionary nature of a natural disaster and helps men, women and children have their basic needs with shelter, food, and water during and after a hurricane. Additionally, when 1st responders arrive as volunteers, having some form of relief aid and supplies available and accesible is imperative to their abilty to function when on islands they are not residents of and may not have family to shelter with while there.
This project will provide bunkers on each inhabited Bahamian Island to ensure that families and those that face a hurricane have much needed supplies & relief aid for present and future hurricanes. The Islands of The Bahamas are consistently hit with catastrophic storms. In the last 5 years, every single CAT4 hurricane hit our shores. To date we are still assisting families whose homes were lost in Hurricane Dorian and Hurricane Season is almost upon us.
