Le Tonle guesthouse and restaurant began life as a training restaurant. It provided hospitality training for marginalized young Cambodians, enabling them to enter the workforce. The tourism industry is now recovering from COVID 19, but demand for staff remains low. While we wait for a full recovery to allow a full training program, Le Tonle continues its spirit of training by offering apprenticeships to five vulnerable young Cambodians.
Young people in rural Cambodia have limited access to education in general, and no access to vocational training. Le Tonle's successful vocational training program allowed young Cambodians to learn hospitality trades. Each year, we trained 20 young women from vulnerable backgrounds. COVID 19 devastated the tourism industry, which previously employed 25% of the Cambodian workforce. The industry is now recovering, but cannot yet offer 20 vacancies locally for students each year.
Le Tonle is using its experience to offer apprenticeships to a small number of young Cambodians. Our training model is Learning by Doing. The emphasis is on workplace training, rather than classroom training, administered through Le Tonle's service staff. The training is unfunded, and supported directly by Le Tonle revenue, but we are stretched to cover costs.
As tourism recovers, current apprentices are almost certain to find employment, either at Le Tonle or other enterprises close to their homes.
