Challenge

In Kenya, 378,397 adolescent girls age 10-19 years became pregnant between 2016-2018 with 13,000 yearly school drop-outs, thus limiting their economic and educational growth. Girls sitting 2018 National Exams were highly affected with Coastal counties leading. In Taita Taveta, 13% of girls gave birth in 2014 and is leading in Female Genital Mutilation at 61.3%. Tana River had 28% of teenage girls giving birth in the same year. Mombasa reported 3,000 cases in 2017 while Kwale 13,624 in 2018.

Solution

We shall ensure strong personality development (self-esteem); provide trainings that offer opportunities for employment; build resilience and life skills for survival; expand business opportunities through linkages to financial support; expand reproductive health services access through referrals; help teenage mothers in community integration ; work with schools, colleges for education/vocational trainings; provide legal support services to sexually abused while sensitizing them on their rights.

Long-Term Impact

Project to deliver 200 girls, young mothers and their families from poverty, enhanced social inclusion, reduced teen pregnancies, improved legal protection/case definitions on girl child abuses/rape, improved family and reproductive health outcomes and contraceptives uptake, improved school enrollment and vocational training uptake by abused teens for skills development, employment and societal integration with good school/college entry and exit correlations.
