Miles of Help Through Christ is volunteer driven & dedicated to helping the homeless. Over the past 4 years we have gone to the streets, woods, and homeless shelters in & around Orlando; we have assisted many individuals & have established relationships with people by providing basic necessities, job referrals, furniture, apartments, etc Because of our residential address we have been passed up for other much needed help. By obtaining a commercial office space we remove those road blocks
With over 600,000 homeless in America the problem is a National ill; Our government & churches aren't doing much and few people choose to get involved.to help the homeless. All homeless shelters in & around Orlando charge a daily fee and there aren't enough beds for everyone. The in-place efforts create a cycle difficult to break. This project will help us establish an office where our homeless & volunteers will work together to end this cycle in their life through job & apartment placement.
We took up the challenge of helping homeless individuals regain their footing in our communities & have been doing so since Feb 2010. We've already helped many individuals by providing bus tickets home to their families, or helping them get jobs & apartments & furniture. A centralized office will open more opportunities through university volunteers needing to do internships; Second Harvest & other national organizations have declined helping us because of our residential address.
Five years ago when I first visited downtown Orlando, near the Homeless Coalition, the hostility was easily visible. Today there are many groups that help by sharing food and clothes with the homeless who are received with love and respect. In that time, I have heard back from many formerly homeless friends; Thomas comes to mind he is now living in Louisiana, he is no longer homeless; he works with the elderly, and directs a homeless ministry of his church. How do you measure this impact?
