Sponsor 40+ Low Income youth-Costa Rica to college

by Boy With a Ball

In a high risk community in SJ, CR (violence, drugs, poverty) where in 2007 there were no college students, we have been able to help 24 students to get into college and find jobs. College graduates in Costa Rica have an 80% more chance to get a job than the ones that do not have a college education and that leads them out of poverty. This program pays for youth's college education and makes sure they have weekly mentoring from professionals and friends so that they can make it out of poverty.

In 2007, In the precario (slum, squatter settlement) Triangulo Solidario there were no college students. A population of 2,000 people living in poverty. Young men usually joined gangs and young women were pregnant before 15 years of age. We have achieved to get 24 people into college and the first 2 just graduated in 2014. If we can keep sending students to college, in less than 10 years the future of the community will be far from poverty and will be different.

College graduates have 80% more chances to find a job in Costa Rica than people who did not have a college education. Also, the difference of salary between someone that went to college and someone that did not is of 2.5 times... from $400 to $1100. With the help of the Western Union Foundation this program was founded in 2011, they also helped the organization build a community center. It has allowed the slum community to go from 0 to 30 college students and it is ready to scale with your help.

Long-Term Impact

The community will come out of poverty. The more college graduates we have, the more a change of culture in the community will be made. The students are also required to volunteer in community service in their community and so they will immediately give back to their neighborhood. They will from then, start to help change the culture of their people into a culture of education and economic prosperity. The point has come where more funding is necessary as the number of high school seniors grow
