On behalf of the "Maidan Family": we thank you all

Dear friends and supporters,

We would like to extend our endless, heartfelt thanks to each one of you who donated to this project. It is thanks to your support, that most of the families have already received 100,000 UAH of financial assistance each. You made possible medical treatment and rehabilitation of the most gravely injured Ukraine's fighters for democracy. Your generosity enabled victims of Maidan to recover and focus positively on the future. From the moment this project has been launched – following the unfortunate tragic events in Ukrainian capital city in the end of February 2014 – up until now, we became a part of the biggest joint initiative of civic organisations and volunteer groups providing support to the victims and families of protest in Ukraine. We are united under the name “Maidan Family”, and you are a part of our family. We cannot be more proud of it!

As of June 2014, we raised over 50 million UAH in donations, including $53,151 with the help of the GlobalGiving, out of which 100 000 will be donated to every and each of 52 children of the fallen heroes and the rest will be equally disributed between the family member of 103 died. Donations were also used for treatment and rehabilitation of those the most severe injured.

On 16-18 May 2014, over 200 people from more than 70 families of the “Heavenly Hundred” visited Kyiv for the first time.

Apart from financial aid, psychological support has played a crucial role in restoring their sense of security, continuity and care. Children and families have been brought together to a "Family Circle" meeting: re-visiting Maidan, living through unavoidable emotions and closure. Maidan has become a place that saw their fathers, husbands and sons alive for the last time.

Nothing will return grieving mothers their sons and children their dads. But we made sure they know they are still loved and will continue to be looked after. In a professionally facilitated meeting, families of the fallen heroes shared their loss, pain and tears.

They discussed different aspects of legal assistance with lawyers, insurance companies and banks. Most importantly, they came up with a constructive plan for the future: inquiry to investigate the deaths of their loved ones, the official report and prosecution on the results of an investigation. The families signed a petition during their meeting with the First Deputy Prime Minister Vitaliy Yarema.

At the same time, children visited a mini-camp outside Kyiv where they spent time playing outdoors with psychologists who provided bereavement support and counselling during the meeting.

Of course, this is only beginning. Currently, we are in the process of proceeding the payments to families and children, assisting family members and activists in establishing their own organisation, partnering for legal assistance needed as well as lobbying for state aid to be proceeded. For families left without the main bread-winners, such assistance will be considerably substantial.

The best summing up are the words of the Didych family from Ivano-Frankivsk: “You helped us more than we could have ever expected”. We believe that together, we can do much more. We will continue working on that.

We also invite you to follow all updates on the initiative on Maidan Family Facebook page.

With gratitude and best hopes for the future,

Nothing will return families their loved ones...
Nothing will return families their loved ones...
But we can make sure they know they
But we can make sure they know they're still loved
And we will continue working on that, together.
And we will continue working on that, together.
