Summary

We request donation of 150 Voice Recorders for Visually impaired pupils at Luhira primary school, Ruvuma region, Tanzania. The school has a shortage of special teachers for this category of children. The visually impaired study with normal ones, fail to catch up like others thus denied equal opportunity in education.Voice recorders will provide a solution to this problem, will enable replaying of the teachings after classes and type the notes using the few braillers machines available at school.

Challenge

Luhira primary school was built in 1929 housing normal pupils. In 1982, the school started enrolling children with special needs, including visual impairment. Currently, the school has 52 disabled pupils whereby 50% are visually impaired. The visually impaired pupils have been attending classes with other normal pupils thus fail to catch up. During our recent visit, the disabled pupils requested for small 150 Voice Recorders to be used during classes. Thus, the gist for raising funds for Luhira.

Solution

By providing the Voice Recorders to Luhira primary school, this will enable the Visually Impaired pupils to get an equal opportunity to access education as other normal pupils. Furthermore, the equipments will increase the chances of the target group to excel to higher levels. "We believe disability is not inability"!

Long-Term Impact

Luhira primary school is among public schools that have been designated to accommodate disabled children in Tanzania since 1982. The 150 Voice Recorders will remain at Luhira school to assist the Visual Impaired pupils in years to come whose numbers are more than 50 pupils per annum. This project will also enable more Visually disabled pupils to access education, ultimately leading to poverty reduction and accordingly addressing SDG 1,4 and 10.
