"Employability of women and young people in sustainable green businesses" is a project of employability for women from three communities in social vulnerability in Costa Rica. This project promotes the leadership of women in economically, socially and environmentally sustainable businesses, increasing their abilities in entrepreneurship such as business management, gender equality, human, sexual and reproductive rights, fight against discrimination and access to health services.
Climate change and COVID 19 have exacerbated the precarious socioeconomic situation of rural and indigenous women, youth and children. Threats such as the degradation of ecosystems, unemployment and food insecurity endanger biodiversity and water availability in communities such as Boruca, Palmar Sur and Rio Celeste, preventing the development of a healthy employability ecosystem that allows the hiring of the population; who have restricted access to education and development opportunities.
Diwo Ambiental seeks to encourage community projects that promote economic, social and environmental sustainability. It is expected that these projects will be carried out in parallel with an ecosystem restoration process, thus increasing the ecosystem services the communities receive and the participation of various groups led by women and young people who will be future mentors and guides for the following generations.
The development of the project in these three communities is the first step that would allow the initiative to be replicated in other communities in Costa Rica and throughout Central America. These three communities represent an opportunity to develop a pilot plan to generate jobs and green businesses. Despite the fact that many of their ecosystems are degraded, they have great natural and cultural wealth, as well as willingness to undertake projects and productive activities.
