Help Vietnam save endangered wildlife

by Center for Hands-on Actions and Networking for Growth and Environment (CHANGE)

Through engaging outreach activities - music festivals, art exhibitions, celebrity video clips, promoting youth community ambassadors - CHANGE educates Vietnamese people about the threat of extinction among endangered species, especially rhinos and pangolins. Increased awareness and empathy will translate into change in behavior, greatly reducing the demand for illegal wildlife products.

2015 was the eight year in a row with an increase in the number of poached rhinos - only in South Africa 1,175 rhinos were killed. The situation is caused by a huge demand for rhino horn in Vietnam and China. Both countries consider it a great gift for business partners, and many people still believe it can cure cancer. Pangolin, the most hunted animal in the world, is facing a similar situation. Its meat is considered a delicacy, and its scales are used in traditional medicine.

CHANGE educates the biggest consumers of rhino and pangolin products - businessmen and cancer patients. We invite celebrities and businessmen to voice their distaste towards using rhino horn/pangolin meat as a symbol of wealth, and leading medical authorities to convince people that it is useless in curing disease. We also engage the young generation through music, art, and educational festivals. They are our ambassadors in their communities, and spread the word among their peers and relatives.

Long-Term Impact

The education initiatives will help people become aware that buying rhino horn or pangolin meat is not only immoral, but also a waste of money. This in turn will drive down the demand for illegal wildlife products, and will lower the amount of money for poachers, giving them less incentives to hunt and kill animals. In the end, it will allow the populations of rhinos and pangolins to recover, and start their journey away from the threat of extinction.
