kccn is a community based organization dully registered under the Kenyans ministry of gender. KCCN is raising funds to provide re- usable sanitary pads to female students in Kibra, sub county of Nairobi. There are no affordable pads in the market and hence girls have to miss school .This technology of an absorbent patch with cotton can be used and washed, The initiative will distribute the pads to female students in kibra tentatively targeting schools and help them save hard earned money.
1000 Female student face enormous challenges in matters of hygiene and sanitation for girls who have menstruation every month in kibera slum. This problem compound the difficulties posed by the in ability to afford sanitary towel as well as the cultural taboo and myths around menstruation.consequently,6 girls miss an average four Days Of school every month, which translate to over a month in a year , meaning they lag behind in class and a times drop out of school all together as the rate grow.
KCCN initiative is to empower the vulnerable girls through provision of re-usable pads and capacity building on menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health for improved performance and self esteem. one packet of the re-usable sanitary towels that will be distributed through this project is sufficient to meet the sanitary need of a girl for three years at a cost of 1,020/-ksh.The adoption of re-usable sanitary towels which trade at 400/- is therefore more likely to be sustainable.
Using the promotion and distribution of re-usable sanitary towels as an entry point for engagement or wider issues related to menstrual hygiene and reproductive health, the project will also demonstrate how opportunities for contact with girls and communities on specific issues and can be used to promote and develop wider action on cross-cutting issues that affect girls health status, environment, water and sanitation, access to quality education and achievement of better education outcomes.
