In the U.S., surgery for a procedure such as microtia can cost around $40,000 PER CHILD. Some of these need to be done in multi-year stage. For the same amount, we can perform surgery on SIXTY children in underdeveloped countries. Our mission teams consist of plastic surgeons, nurses, and volunteers who give freely of their time and skills. We provide free surgery to children and adults suffering from congenital facial deformities. Would you help us give smiles?
In many countries, a simple birth defect can become a devastating social stigma. People do not have the financial resources or transportation to get medical care. The family feels as though a CURSE has been placed upon them. Often, families are broken apart when a child is born with a deformity. Our goal is to help TRANSFORM LIVES, to RESTORE CONFIDENCE so that each child can lead a productive, fulfilling life. The stakes are high.
HUGS sends a team of doctors who are specialized in plastic surgery to Vietnam, Guatemala, and Ecuador, and provides free surgery and care to the children with microtia, cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial injuries due to burns and accidents. These procedures have to be done in stages, which is why we always come back. We believe that this is a right way to do it. We come in, commit to the country, develop a good bond with children and their family, and come back for after-care.
The project will give smiles back to the children permanently who were once ostracized and bullied by the society, friends, and even their own family due to the congenital deformity. It's a LIFE TRANSFORMATION. We've encountered many occasions where children cried of joy as they stood in front of a mirror and could not believe that their ever-lasting stigma from a defect is fixed. As a result, children are UNBURDENED from the shame and isolation that accompanies their deformity.
