Thanks to this project El Banco de Alimentos will be able to improve the nutritional status of children and young people in need giving them all daily meals. All this while providing a better knowledge about food and nutrition, so the children can develop and acquire good eating habits. The Bank has the great opportunity to guarantee food to vulnerable communities in Bogota, Colombia, in addition to providing professional accompaniment and improving the required facilities.
According to Colombia's Instituto Nacional de Salud a five years old child dies in the country every 33 hours because of hunger. El Banco de Alimentos would like to eliminate this dramatic problem from Bogota and its surroundings. If the goal is reached we would be able to help 50 children and provide them daily meals. It is important also to remember that this is not the final goal but just a small step towards the more ambitious objective of el Banco: help and provide food for 1000 children.
First of all, we create a cycle of menus adjusted to the characteristics of the children and we keep monitoring thir health in the long term. In addition, we generate learning processes, which are based on ludic activities in matters of food and nutrition and self-care. We also promote preventive actions in health, such as monitoring and treating the prevalent diseases of childhood and, finally, we aim to raise awareness of family members as caregivers of children on health issues.
In the long term, ensuring daily healthy meals to kids will help eradicating malnutrition in Bogota and will give children more energy and will improve both their physical and their mental health. A complete nutrition and good health will help these children to achieve higher levels in education: they will be able to attend school, being focused and productive in what they're doing. In the end, children will surely be able to live a happier life.
