Summary

In November 2022, 10 8th graders sat for the Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) exams. This examination forms the basis of transition to high school and determines which school the students join. The 10 #AkiliGirls who sat for the exams performed very well and posted a class mean of 360 marks. Vera scored the highest marks of 397 out of 500 with the last girl scoring 323 marks. We are sending these girls to high school to continue pursuing their dreams and reach their full potential

Challenge

Many parents are struggling to feed their families and take their children to school as they gradually recover from the job losses and failed businesses due to the covid 19 pandemic. Although school fees was reduced in Kenya during the covid 19 period, the government has reverted to the exorbitant school fees charged before the pandemic. Akili girls come from poor families and are unable to meet these expensive high school fees that are as high as $800 per year.

Solution

We are raising $3000 to transition the 10 girls to school by paying school fees, daily school lunch program and buying school uniforms and sanitary pads for the girls for 1 year. The Akili Girls Scholarship Fund seeks to eliminate all barriers that hold girls back and keep them in school to improve their agency and empower them to achieve their full potential.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that Education is the only way out of poverty for these marginalized rural girls and a platform they will use to create community led change once they graduate. Our goal is to improve girls' agency through life skills mentorship, leadership skills training, guidance and counseling . We look forward to an empowered community of girls and women with the agency to realize their dreams and support not only themselves but also their families and community at large.
