In December, the Kalaweit Association announced the discovery of a population of orangutans, perhaps 100, but also more than 200 gibbons, in a severely threatened forest pouch in Borneo. To save them, Kalaweit has launched the most ambitious and URGENT reserve project in the history of Kalaweit. All these animals have found refuge in this pocket of forest, surrounded by the companies of palm oil and coal and we want to do everything to protect them. For this we have to buy this forest !
This project, called "Dulan project", aims to secure a forest pouch (+/-1,500 hectares) identified by a company of palm oil (PT BAK), several coal companies (PT Yasmin and PT Haji Haman), and a track of a forest Company (PT BIMAL). This forest has become a heaven for animals, including orangutans fleeing deforestation. The extreme wealth of the forest, a mosaic of primary and secondary forest, allows to shelter a large number of individuals of each species.
The method is to buy the parcels before the companies. The whole forest belongs to private landowners. Indonesian law only authorizes its nationals of Indonesian nationality to purchase land. Thus title deeds are in the name of Chanee, founder of Kalaweit and the usufruct is bequeathed to the association Kalaweit. Kalaweit already manages 750 hectares on other sites in Sumatra and Borneo. In 2 months, Kalaweit has bought almost 200 hectares ! Help us to reach our aim and save wildlife !
Once the land has been purchased, Kalaweit sets up daily equestrian patrols to prevent poaching and illegal logging. Once the zone is secured, the aim is to manage it as a private reserve, in the very long term and in agreement and with the support of the local people, who will always have access to the area for their traditional activities in the forest and in the lake. The support of the villagers is very important and they don't want to see palm oil companies destroy the forest around them.
