A day trip for children at Vilpatti crèche
A day trip for children at Vilpatti crèche

Major achievements:

  • Among the 27 children attending the crèche last year, 12 have been enrolled in formal education at a government run primary school in Vilpatti.   This year 30 children have been enrolled in the crèche.  All children have been provided with bright woolen jumpers (see photos)!
  • On 18 and 25 June 2010, a team of doctors and nurses provided health checks and treatment to children at the crèche: 29 children received treatment.
  • 303 schoolchildren in Vilpatti were provided with supplementary tuition.
  • This year 19 girls and 26 boys were provided with temporary shelter at the Rescue Centre in Dindigul; 16 of the children have been reunited with their families.
  • In March 2010, 29 children completed their vocational training and a new batch of 32 children was enrolled on dressmaking and welding courses.
  • 19 school drop-outs were identified; nine of whom have been reintegrated back into school.
  • Four children’s Sangams (groups) have been established in Palani with 125 members.  The Sangams meet weekly to discuss various issues, share information and provide peer advice and support.
  • In June, 22 Sangam leaders in Palani, 88 in Dindigul and 36 in Vilpatti were trained in child rights and participation over two days.
  • 12 Guided Learning Centres (GLC) have been established in Vilpatti, Dindigul and Palani with a total of 650 children actively participating.  The Centres provide remedial education to children who have dropped out of school to help reintegrate them into mainstream education.
  • 11 GLC teachers and six staff members have been trained in child rights and participation.

Case Studies:

  • A six year old girl, found alone in Kodaikanal by the police, was recently referred to Arunodhaya.  She has learning disabilities and is unable to talk.  Having spent a few days at the Rescue Centre in Dindigul she has started smiling and communicating with other children.  Arunodhaya has found out that she is from Madurai, a town 70km away, and is in the process of tracing her family.
  •  A 12 year old boy from Karnataka who had run away from home was recently found by police in Dindigul.  He had been working in hotels and sleeping on the streets.  He was referred to Arunodhaya and has been helped to enroll in middle school.
  •  The District Scheduled Caste and Tribal Department (DSCTD) identified seven tribal children in Kodaikanal and enrolled them in a school in Dindigul.  Without accommodation in Dindigul the girls were referred to Arunodhaya.  Arunodhaya provided them with temporary shelter and care for two weeks until DSCTD organised accommodation.
