5,000 babies are born with heart problems each year in the UK but only one third are diagnosed before birth, meaning that hundreds of babies do not get immediate access to the life saving support they need and some are sent home undiagnosed only to collapse and be rushed back to hospital. Help Tiny Tickers to improve the detection, diagnosis and care of babies with heart problems before birth and in the first year of life.
Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects almost 1% of all babies and every year 5,000 babies and their families in the UK will be affected. Half of these babies will have major CHD and will require surgery or intervention in the first year of life. Heart babies have the greatest chance of survival and quality of life if they are detected and diagnosed through antenatal screening but currently only 45% of heart babies are diagnosed before birth.
Tiny Tickers will help to raise the standards of antenatal screening through influencing national bodies with our expertise on this subject. We provide training to maternity hospitals to help sonographers detect heart disease at the 20 week scan. We raise awareness of the problem and of the symptoms of heart problems in newborn babies amongst both parents and health professionals. We undertake research to recommend improvements to treatments of heart babies.
Thanks to our work over the past decade detection rates for congenital heart diseases have increased but there is still so much more to do. Every improvement we make will save the lives of babies who are currently diagnosed too late and improve the quality of life for heart babies.
