Dhanushadham Protected Forest is surrounded by heavy population of 45,008 individuals inside Dhanushadham municipality. The forest has lost its equilibrium in last 10 years due to heavy demand of firewood and timber products. Measure threats to the forest are Unmanaged firewood collection, illicit felling, overgrazing (about 1000 cattle per day), intentional forest fire, tree bark pilling, mud collection, wildlife poaching and heavy trespassers to the forest.

We have been organizing several community interaction and several awareness programs for the dependent communities. We also formed a Jhijhiya (a special indigenous cultural performance) team of highly depended dalit women and promote as an alternative livelihood, distribute improved oven for free to reduce demand of firewood. Above 200 thousand plant saplings are distributed every ear for free to make locals independent on firewood and timber products thus minimizing the pressure of forest.

Long-Term Impact

Interaction and awareness programs will motivate local community towards the need of conservation of the forest. Jhijhiya and such cultural groups will support earn an alternative livelihood. Improved oven system will reduce demand of firewood thus reduce the pressure to collect firewood. Distribution of free plant saplings will make farmers and local public independent on firewood and timber products where it will also be an extra source of income on other hand.
