This project will provide ongoing funding to ensure that the medical, housing, and daily necessities of our birds are always met. The cost of medical care for our birds varies, but overall it is a significant percentage of our annual funding. To be able to access care without worrying about fundraising to cover the cost of that care would be a welcome change. The secondary goal of this project will be to help pay our monthly rent on our shelter location.
Greyhaven provides rescue, rehabilitation and medical care for captive parrots. Through our adoption program, we find them new homes where they can be much loved members of a family. One of the biggest challenges is the ever growing number of parrots who are being surrendered into our care. There are more birds needing homes than there are qualified homes for. Most people do not understand the huge commitment it takes to successfully live with a parrot.
Greyhaven provides medical care, an appropriate, nutritious diet and a warm, safe and comfortable home for the birds. Our volunteers provide love and enrichment for these intelligent, sentient beings. Our two largest annual expenses are veterinary care and rent for our shelter. We want to ensure that every parrot that needs our help, receives it. The cost of medical care for our birds varies, but overall it is a significant part of our budget and we want to ensure we provide the best in care.
This project will provide much needed ongoing care to the many parrots who come into our program. Without Greyhaven, many birds would have nowhere to go. Through our education program, we work to educate the public and potential adopters about the plight of parrots in captivity and to ensure they understand the complex social and physical needs of parrots. We hope in time that this will reduce the numbers of people acquiring baby birds and will reduce the number birds being surrendered.
