Project Update, Juriti

By Joshua Reed | Intern Dreams Can Be

Instituto Ecocidadania Juriti Center

The Project Juriti has accomplished and begun many strong developments in 2007 and the beginning of 2008. They are currently in the middle of constructing the ²Instituto Ecocidadania Juriti Center² which has nearly been completed. The building is however currently without a proper covering. This is now becoming a problem considering that they are in the middle of the rainy season and the structure of the building is continually being compromised.

Other improvements this year include the enlargement of the Expresso Digital,(Digital Express) which offers access to information technology, and the Circo Escola de Ecocidadania (Ecology and Citizenship Circus School). They also have recently realized partnerships with the Ceará State Government through SECULT, Secretaria do Estado e da Cultura (State and Culture Secretariat) and STDS, and the Secretaria do Trabalho e Desenvolvimento Social (Work and Social Development Secretariat). They have increased their professionals board and have also been joined by around 20 new volunteers. After March 2008, they will be able to start working on weekends with the support of Projeto Criança Esperança / UNESCO / Rede Globo.

They have currently increased the amount of youth that they are able to reach out and offer support to. With the enlargement of the Expresso Digital they are now able to offer free internet access to 24 neighborhoods from Juazeiro do Norte.

Recently Juriti was recognized as a finalist for the Prêmio Cultura Viva (Live Culture Award), Prêmio SECULT de Estímulo ao Circo 2007 (SECULT Prize for Stimulation of Circus 2007), and the Prêmio BNB de Cultura 2007 (BNB Prize for Culture 2007). The project was also recognized as Ponto de Cultura do Ministério da Cultura (Cultural Center of the Ministry of Culture).

The recent funds received from Global Giving have used in the development of a beauty parlor within the community designated for the families of marginalized teenagers. Other funds where used in the contruction of a store in Colina do Horto which is being used to develop funds and promote citizenship.
