Summary

There are over 700 migrant teachers currently serving in more than 70 Migrant Learning Centers (MLCs) in Thailand. The migrant teachers work with inadequate resources, have fewer training opportunities, and are underpaid for the valuable work they do to ensure that migrant children are not left uneducated. In response to the urgent needs of these at-risk migrant teachers, BEAM is raising funds for the remuneration, capacity building, safety, and security of 20 migrant teachers for one year.

Challenge

Due to the lack of quality and an equitable continuous education system, many migrant children face barriers accessing social services including education in both Thailand and Myanmar. Despite the barriers, migrant teachers work hard to provide education for over 10,000 migrant children to ensure they enjoy their right to basic education and a better future. Sadly, the migrant teachers are underpaid, have inadequate resources and training opportunities, making their work extremely difficult.

Solution

Through this project, 20 migrant teachers who are currently receiving about $50 as salary per month will receive adequate remuneration to cater for their living expenses, including the provision of basic protection. A 7-day training program will be organized twice a year to enhance the capacity and growth of the teachers, including access to information technology resources. Better housing arrangements will also be implemented for their safety and security.

Long-Term Impact

The project is in three phases with the goal to raise $40,000 for each phase, funding 60 teachers in total (20 teachers per phase). The greatest long-term impact of this project is the opportunity it provides for migrant teachers to provide quality education to migrant children. Education that prepares the children to positively contribute to their society. Failure to respond to this need will lead to migrant children being at greater risk of becoming victims of child labor and trafficking.
