Dear everyone,
Attached you will find the report for the January - June 2023 campaign.
Day after day we help low-income children and young adults suffering from cancer, get a new opportunity, fighting all together and making a difference. One by one, and working together, we are creating awareness for those who need a voice, help, a new way to see this life-threatening disease. We must keep going, keep doing as much as we can, to save as many low-income children and young adults as possible.
Thank you for your continous support, we are changing and lives!
Best regards,
Olivia

Casa de la Amistad
In Mexico, 5,000 new cases of childhood cancer are diagnosed each year, being the leading cause of death by disease in children between 5 and 14 years old.
Of those cases diagnosed throughout the country, only 50% can save their lives; this is because there is a late diagnosis and in many cases the economic situation of these families is a limitation since they must move from their communities to the closest city where there is a public hospital that can attend to them.
In 32 years of uninterrupted work, Casa de la Amistad has committed itself to increase the survival rate and giving low-income children and young people with cancer a chance to live, complementing their cancer treatment with medications, special tests, bone marrow transplants, prosthesis, endoprosthesis and necessary supplies for their treatment with no cost to their families.
Thanks to the successful July Bonus Day campaign, with the help of our donors and GlobalGiving, we have supported 13 children and young people from different states, covering special studies that allow evaluating their response to the oncological treatment and ensure that it is the appropriate protocol for their diagnosis.

Dear Friends,
I am very happy to have a space to share with you how we kicked off this year because we kicked it off really great!
Just to give you an idea, in January, it was Three Kings Day, so we got all dressed up and we gave gifts to our users. In February, it was World Cancer Day so we joined the Union for International Cancer Control's (UICC) 'Close the Care Gap' campaign and got some iconic buildings illuminated in representative colours. And, in March, it was the spring arrival, so our users painted a 'tree of life' mural on the wall, which allowed them to get distracted, have fun and spread some ‘spring vibes’ among us.
Of course, all this while continuing to provide –and improve as we do- the necessary medical and operational supports.

Maribel | Montserrat´s mom | 7 years old | Estado de México | High Risk Lymphoblastic Leukaemia
‘Montse began to have pain in her knees, little appetite and a lot of fatigue. One day, her entire body became paralysed so I took her to a chiropractor, but she didn't get better, so I got her a pass to the Instituto Nacional de Pediatría (National Institute of Paediatrics).
She was taken to the emergency room and she received several studies, with which the doctor gave me her diagnosis. It was very difficult for me to find out about her disease... no parent wants his child to go through this.
I am a single mother and I do not have the resources to pay for oncological treatment, so the social worker at the institute told me about Casa de la Amistad (House for Frienship). There, they have given us medicines when there are none at the hospital, as well as housing, nourishment and transport.
Montse is a very nice and cheerful girl. She loves playing doctor and putting on a gown; she says that when she grows up she wants to be a paediatric oncologist like her doctors.
I ask donors to continue to support Casa de la Amistad (House for Friendship) so that more children can receive their oncological treatment.
Thank you very much!’
None of this would have been possible without you… thank you for sharing this season with us!
Warm wishes,
Duana + CDLA Team
P.S. Only until this Friday 08 April, you can join our ‘Little by Little (Spring)’ campaign, in which all donations up to $50 USD, per unique donor, will be matched at 50%. We would feel immensely grateful, honoured and excited if you decided to join us and encourage your friends and family to do so as well!

Dear Friends,
It is always very exciting to have a space to share with you what we have been doing over the last few months. And this time, it is even more so, as it is the end of the year and we are looking back with great commotion and forward with huge impulse.
This year went by like smoke through a keyhole –and even though we say the same thing every year, each one is special in its own way. A quick recap: children receiving presents on Three Kings Day (Día de Reyes Magos), playing on Children´s Day (Día del Niño) and dressing up in Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos); children getting school classes, emotional support and artistic workshops every month; children waiting at the entrance of the shelter, with small blankets and lunch boxes, for the bus that would take them to the hospital every day. So yes, child cancer went on and Covid-19 went on, but so did we –how could we not?

Micaela | Jesús’ Mom | 8 years old | Michoacán | Lindt Tumour
‘One day, I came home from work and started playing with Jesús and suddenly I realised he had a little ball in his stomach, so I took him to the doctor. After several tests, they told me he had cancer and the first thing that came to my mind was: 'my son is going to die'.
They also told me that they had to operate immediately and that he had a 95% chance of not making it. I didn't want to sign the consent form, but Jesús told me he was going to be fine and gave me the strength I needed.
He is currently undergoing treatment and has received 11 radiotherapies and has started his chemotherapies, which will be a total of 50. He is also in the second year of primary school, he likes football and when he grows up, he wants to be a policeman to stop the bad guys. He is very cheerful, optimistic and playful.
For us, Casa de la Amistad is a blessing. They offer us a lot of support without charging us anything at all. We only have to worry about my son's health.
Thank you!'
All this is thanks to each and every one of you... thank you for giving the gift of life!
'I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach!'
