Michael Rothwell and Irene Mukuria
This was a very productive period for Take Heart Association Project (THAP) Inc. The quarter began with in-the-field traveler, Michael Rothwell, from the Global Giving Foundation being hosted by United States representatives, Marilyn James and Barbara Ciconte followed by a site visit to the THAP Family Support Center in Nairobi Kenya in March. These activities were in response to a request from Children & Charity International for support after the death of THAP founder, Peter Kamau in Kenya. Michael was welcomed at THAP Family Support Center by Coordinator Irene Mukuria where he saw some of THAP patients, met with office staff, and hosted several informative seminars. He provided valuable information, and insights on how THAP could continue its much needed services for families, and communities. At the end of his visit Michael reported:
“Children and Charity International and Take Heart Association Project Kenya are doing extraordinary work in giving access to some of Kenya's most disadvantaged to medical treatment that they otherwise wouldn't have access to. It was a pleasure to learn more about their fantastic work and I wish them the best of luck in the future!”
THAP continued support of children and families by sending twelve children for evaluation from visiting Cardiologists from the United States at Tenwek Hospital, in Bomet Kenya during the months of March and April. One child has already received follow-up corrective surgery and another has travelled to Aswan Medical Center in Egypt for valve replacement. To date, we have helped 192 children with treatment and corrective heart surgeries. THAP Family Support Center accommodated 70 children and families this quarter including little Tami, who has resided at the Center for the past year in order to receive weekly, life-saving treatments, at Mater Hospital.
Your support has made all these positive outcomes possible. Thank you for your continued donations and in-kind support that allow us to help many children and families get needed evaluations, echograms, medicine, surgeries, and post-op care. We look forward to continuing this much needed work.
