With new people arriving on Lesvos every day, and the thousands still stranded in Greece increasingly fading from public consciousness, we are struggling to carry our work forward in 2019. It has now been over a year since many big donors pulled out of the country. For the coming months, we have strong partnerships in place, long-term strategies, and a tireless team fighting for our mission. 2019 is a year with much promise, but we do need help living up to it. Urgently.
For over three years now we have never ceased our commitment to serve as a lighthouse for those in need. Whether on the shores of Lesvos or in Ritsona camp, our teams have been there as an unwavering beacon of warmth and stability. With your help, we can continue to meet this challenge. We have a successful ECO cleanup programme planned for Lesvos and a wealth of ideas for summer activities in Ritsona. Your support is vital to ensuring that we can carry our plans forward.
In 2018, our emergency response teams on Lesvos assisted around 7,000 people who had made the dangerous Aegean crossing, a 50% increase compared to the previous year - and boats are still arriving. In Ritsona, our programmes are more sustainable than ever, with the new Resident Volunteer programme allowing camp residents to take ownership of the spaces and participate in their development. As thousands are caught in limbo, LHR gives them room to develop their talents and form a community.
