Relief International's Youth-Build Boyle Heights Charter School program gives "disadvantaged" youth ages 16-24 a rare opportunity to earn a high school diploma placing them on a path to university, as they learn to creatively give back to their community. Students engage in various extracurricular projects relating to topics such as sustainable, "green" living, eating healthy and organic gardening, and engage actively in social justice--all while growing as individuals in the process.

Boyle Heights, whose inhabitants are largely made up of youth, suffers from a significantly high unemployment rate putting a quarter of the population at or below the poverty line, making it one of the most vulnerable areas in the state of California and the nation. Roughly 42% of residents have less than a ninth grade education, compared to the state average of %10.

Relief International's program gives kids the opportunity to receive a high school diploma as well as a culturally relevant education themed in social justice, community development, and environmental studies. Students have access to post secondary education and advanced training; green building and manufacturing training; and locally grown food access and distribution training. Students receive a well-rounded education placing them on a direct path to university and successful careers.

Long-Term Impact

Relief International's Youth Build Charter School is an innovative youth development program that aims to have students not only grow intellectually, but also socially and emotionally as successful individuals, who learn to become leaders and in turn take initiative to change their community's future.
