Each year, Safe Horizon provides shelter to over 3,000 women and children who have left abusive homes. Many have escaped violence with just the clothes on their backs and whatever items they could grab as they fled. This project will provide essential housewares (cooking supplies, cleaning products, bedding, etc.) for 1,000 families in Safe Horizon's domestic violence shelters, giving the women and children we help the comfort and safety of home.
1 out of every 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence during her lifetime. There are many reasons why a woman who suffer violence at home may choose to stay with her abuser. She is dependent on him for financial support. They have children together. She loves him. Additionally, we know that the risk of violence increases when a victim decides to leave the abuser.
Safe Horizon's domestic violence shelters are there for the women and children who make the difficult decision to flee domestic violence, but have nowhere to go. In addition to providing a safe place to stay, we offer counseling, legal support, advocacy, childcare, and practical assistance.
Safe Horizon houses over 3,000 women and children every year. During the shelter stay, we encourage every woman to utilize the services we offer so that she can build a safe and independent life for herself and her children.
