Oasis South Africa is a youth-led organisation. We plan to grow our More Than A Teacher programme, which inspires unemployed young people to train as educators in South Africa. This project will recruit and train another five young people, enabling them to gain a teaching qualification whilst supporting the learning of 1000 pupils in schools across inner city Johannesburg.
In South Africa more than 1 in 3 young people aged 16-34 are unemployed. In communities such as Cosmo City, in northern Johannesburg these numbers are often higher due to a lack of skilled young people. A major culprit is South Africa's deficient education system, recently identified as the "single greatest obstacle to socio-economic advancement" in a key development report . This project will train five motivated teachers, and improve the education experience for over 1000 learners.
More Than A Teacher improves educational provision in under-served communities by providing motivated teaching assistants who both support students' learning and act as role models for the students. In addition, each teaching assistant launches an extra-curricular project that specifically addresses students needs in their local context. More Than A Teacher addresses youth unemployment by equipping young people with a teaching qualification and a route into long-term employment.
The More Than A Teacher project will provide five unemployed young people with a four-year package of training and support, equipping them with a teaching qualification from the University of South Africa. From the project pilot phase, 89% of participants have gone on into employment. During this period the participants will act as teaching assistants, impacting over 1000 young learners. This 'peer to near' role modelling and support improves educational attainment in areas of deprivation.
