This project will provide organic cowpea seeds, organic pesticide, and pesticide sprayers to 500 women farmers of Binde (Burkina Faso), along with training and field visits to make sure they are using the pesticide the right way. The harvest will be sold to the local government, which has agreed to buy it, and supply it to public schools for lunch. Your donation not only allows women farmers to be financially independent but also allows students of the municipality to consume healthy food.
Most women in rural Burkina Faso are responsible for providing food for their families, they spend an outsized amount of time looking for key resources, and mostly rely on farming. Their plots are usually small and of inferior quality, lacking the necessary inputs. In particular, the quantity of fertilizer is dangerously low nationwide, resulting in plots of land that are incapable of producing to their full potential. Moreover, female farmers are even less likely to have access to fertilizer.
FarmSahel is addressing this issue by providing organic seeds and organic pesticide needed to ensure growth in current agricultural climates. By offering high quality inputs to smallholder women farmers, and training them to use it properly, farm productivity will be dramatically increased. This project not only allows women farmers to be financially independent but also allows students to consume healthy food because the production will be used for school lunch.
This project will help break the cycle of poverty and provide food security by enabling 500 smallholder women farmers to increase their productivity and grow incomes. These higher yields will empower women to increase their ability to participate in the global food market. Since the production will be used for school lunch, it will provide a nutritious diet for children and help establish a foundation for healthy eating habits and nutritional knowledge that a child can apply throughout life.
