This project will provide high-quality fertilizer to 250 women farmers in the Centre-Sud region of Burkina Faso. Working with underserved rural communities, FarmSahel empowers small-scale women farmers by providing access to hands-on training, modern farming equipment, and quality seeds and fertilizer to help increase productivity and break the cycle of poverty.
Most women in rural Burkina Faso are responsible for providing food for their families, they spend an outsized amount of time looking for key resources, and mostly rely on farming. Their plots are usually small and of inferior quality, lacking the necessary inputs. In particular, the quantity of fertilizer is dangerously low nationwide, resulting in plots of land that are incapable of producing to their full potential. Moreover, female farmers are even less likely to have access to fertilizer.
FarmSahel is addressing this issue by providing quality fertilizer needed to ensure growth in current agricultural climates. By offering fertilizer to smallholder women farmers, and training them to use it properly, farm productivity will be dramatically increased. While the need for more fertilizer is always essential, right now is the growing season for hearty vegetables, and the need is even more crucial.
This project will help break the cycle of poverty and provide food security by enabling 250 smallholder women farmers to increase their productivity and grow incomes. These higher yields will empower women to increase their ability to participate in the global food market. By helping women farmers in Burkina Faso "grow", this project will create local jobs by training field workers to assist farmers on using fertilizer efficiently and adopting best sustainable practices in farming.
